NORM TIPPING

Norm Tipping Project

The Norm Tipping project investigates how the COVID-19 pandemic has stimulated a rapid and deep shift in people’s norms and the potential to apply those lessons to accelerate humanity’s transitions towards environmental sustainability and racial, social, and economic equity.

The project will bring together Cascade Institute researchers and applied mathematicians and data scientists to:

  1. mine online media feeds and build datasets to capture the evolution of relevant social norms across multiple societies over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic and
  2. design conceptual and mathematical models to compare the normative systems of different groups across these societies, simulate the dynamics of observed norm change during the pandemic, identify future potential pathways for such change, and study how those pathways might influence future political mobilization to further sustainability and equity transitions.
