Deep Earth Energy Production (DEEP) has announced Canada’s first commercial-scale geothermal power facility near Estevan, Saskatchewan. Last week, DEEP partnered with international drilling and geothermal leader SLB to develop the project. Together, DEEP and SLB will start by drilling two wells to capture heat within the Earth and produce clean, reliable baseload power. Phase 2 could see up to 18 additional wells drilled to produce 30 MW of power.
The Cascade Institute's Peter Massie and Emily Smejkal offered commentary in a story fromThe Energy Mix about the development:
“In 2024, the prospects for geothermal power were utterly transformed,” wrote Peter Massie, director of Cascade’s Ottawa-based Geothermal Energy Office, and Emily Smejkal, the institute’s geothermal policy lead. “ In 2025, Canada must decide whether to lead or follow in this arena. Recent breakthroughs create a clear opportunity for our country, but other nations are acting fast, and Canada’s window for leadership is closing rapidly.”
